Bulk billed Medicare health check · West Pennant Hills
The Over 75 Health Assessment: stay well, stay independent, stay at home
Once a year, Medicare fully funds an over 75 health assessment: a thorough, unhurried check with one of our practice nurses and your GP. We review your medications, memory, mobility and more, so small issues are found before they become big ones.
- Bulk billed. No cost to you.
- About one hour with a practice nurse, then your GP.
- No referral needed. Anyone 75 and over, once every 12 months.
What is an Over 75 Health Assessment?
An annual, in-depth health check funded by Medicare (MBS items 701 to 707) for all Australians aged 75 and over. It covers your physical health, medications, memory, mobility, hearing, vision and home safety, and takes about an hour with a practice nurse and your GP. It's bulk billed and no referral is needed.
At Rosedale the assessment is nurse-led and GP-reviewed, with a practice pharmacist and dietitian under the same roof when your plan calls for them. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients are eligible from age 55.
You're not alone. In 2020 only about one in three eligible older Australians had a 75+ health assessment. It's fully funded and it's never too late to start.
What happens on the day
Three unhurried steps
Your nurse
Around 45 minutes with Karen, Bianca or Cloudia. They go through your health history, medications, how you're managing at home, your hearing, vision, memory and balance. Bring your medication list and your glasses.
Your GP
Your doctor examines you, works through the nurse's findings and talks with you about anything that needs attention, from vaccination gaps to blood pressure to sleep. Nothing is decided without you.
Your plan
If anything would help, whether a medication review with our pharmacist, a dietitian visit, a hearing check or My Aged Care support, we arrange it from here. Most of it happens under the same roof.
What the assessment includes
Why it matters
What a thorough check can change
The point isn't just to find illness. It's to notice small risks early, act on them, and help you stay safe and independent at home.
Finds what busy appointments miss
A structured assessment is more likely than an issue-focused visit to pick up hearing loss, vision problems, diabetes, high cholesterol and low vitamin D.
Completes the checks that matter
Patients are more likely to be up to date on blood pressure, vaccinations and bowel cancer screening after an assessment.
Turns findings into action
A Cochrane review of 21 trials found comprehensive assessments may reduce unplanned hospital admissions. A concern becomes a plan, not a note in a file.
About this evidence: these findings come from studies of comprehensive older-person health assessments, several of them observational. They show what assessments are associated with rather than proving cause and effect, and results vary between people. Your GP will discuss what the assessment means for you.
Who looks after you
A whole team, one patient record, one roof.
Practice nursesKaren, Bianca and CloudiaYour assessment starts with our nursing team: experienced, unhurried, and often the first to spot something worth acting on.
Practice pharmacistChris ThorntonIf you take several medications, Chris reviews them alongside your GP, reducing side effects and cutting out what you no longer need.
DietitianMary-Anne ChamounWhere nutrition, weight or appetite need attention, Mary-Anne sees you here at the practice, with your full record in front of her.
Booking for Mum or Dad?
Many of these assessments are arranged by sons and daughters who want to know their parent is being properly looked after, especially when they can't be there every day. You're welcome at the appointment, and with your parent's consent we'll keep you in the loop on the plan.
- You can book on their behalf, online or by calling reception on 02 9680 9644.
- Family and carers are welcome in the appointment itself.
- We connect the supports: My Aged Care, home services and allied health, so it doesn't fall to you to coordinate.
- Parking is easy at our ground-floor rooms at 70 Castle Hill Road.
Common questions
How much does an over 75 health assessment cost?
Nothing. It's bulk billed under Medicare at Rosedale, so there is no out-of-pocket cost.
I feel healthy. Do I still need one?
That's exactly when it's most useful. The assessment is designed to find things before you'd notice them yourself: a medication interaction, an early memory change, a falls risk.
How long does it take, and what should I bring?
Allow about an hour: roughly 45 minutes with the nurse, then time with your GP. Bring your medications (or a list), your glasses and hearing aids if you use them, and any specialist letters you have at home.
Do I need a referral?
No. Anyone aged 75 or over can book directly, online or by phoning 02 9680 9644.
Can my family come with me?
Yes, and we encourage it. A family member or carer often adds helpful detail, and it means everyone hears the plan first-hand.
Will anything change without my say-so?
No. The assessment is a conversation, not a checklist done to you. Every recommendation is discussed with you, and you decide what happens next.
I've had one before. When am I due again?
Medicare funds one assessment every 12 months. If it's been more than a year since your last one, you're due now. Call us and we'll check for you.
