ADHD medication restart · West Pennant Hills
You were treated before. Now you need a fresh review, not an old prescription repeated.
For NSW patients who have an ADHD diagnosis and took ADHD medication before, but are not taking it now. Restart starts with an in-person safety check.
- Previous diagnosis required
- Previous treatment required
- In person
- Records 48 hours before
Restart is not automatic. Your old medicine or dose may not suit you now. The doctor decides on treatment after seeing you, and a script is never guaranteed.
Choose the right starting point
Restart means treatment began before, then stopped.
How long you have been off medication matters. But there is no set time that means you can or can't restart.
Previously treated, now off medication
You have a diagnosis, you took prescribed ADHD medication before, and now you want a fresh review.
See the restart process →Taking a stable dose now
If you take medication now and your dose has been stable for at least three months, use the continuation pathway.
Go to continuation →Never treated before
If you have a diagnosis but never started medication, choose initiation. If you don't have a diagnosis, choose assessment.
Compare pathways →Before the appointment
Send records at least 48 hours beforehand.
Your past treatment matters. But what happens next depends on your health today and how much detail your records have.
Please send
- Your diagnostic report
- Letters from your psychiatrist, paediatrician or past prescriber
- The medicine and dose you took before
- Proof of past scripts, if you have it
- Recent test results and health information
Please be ready to discuss
- Why treatment stopped and how long ago
- How it helped and any side effects you had
- Any changes in your physical or mental health
- Medicines you take now, sleep, mood, and alcohol or drug use
- Your goals and concerns about restarting
How restart care works
Review first. Restart second.
A past script does not mean the same treatment is safe or right for you now.
Send your records
Send your diagnosis, past scripts and recent health details at least 48 hours before your visit.
Attend in person
Dr Saini looks at your diagnosis, why treatment stopped, how it worked for you and your health today.
Complete safety checks
We do a health check. You may need tests or more records.
Agree the next step
If restarting suits you, you'll agree on a careful plan. If not, we'll talk about tests, a new assessment or seeing a specialist.
What may have changed
The right medicine and dose are based on today.
We look at how long you've been off treatment, your health check, other medicines, physical health, sleep, mood, alcohol or drug use, and how you responded before.
Restart may be appropriate
The doctor may suggest a lower starting dose, a different medicine or closer check-ups at first.
More information may be needed
You may need blood tests, an ECG, a urine test, more records or NSW Health approval first.
Another pathway may be safer
After a long break, or if your health has changed, you may need a new assessment or a specialist's input.
Transparent fees
One comprehensive restart review.
Included in the appointment

Questions before booking
Restart care FAQs.
Can an ADHD medication restart appointment be done by telehealth?
No. Restart appointments are in person at West Pennant Hills, so we can do a health check and a fresh safety review.
How long can I have been off ADHD medication?
There is no set time limit. A longer break makes it more likely you will need more records, a new assessment or a specialist's input.
Will I restart ADHD medication at my previous dose?
Not always. The right medicine and dose depend on how long you stopped, your health today, how you responded before and safety checks.
Will I receive ADHD medication on the day?
Not always. You may need more records, tests, a specialist's input or NSW Health approval first. The doctor decides on treatment after seeing you, and a script is never guaranteed.
What happens after restarting ADHD medication?
You will have check-ups based on your treatment plan. Once your treatment is settled and stable, your ongoing care can move to the continuation pathway.
